With constant temptations such as checking email, looking at your phone and other distractions, it’s not surprising that the average attention span on a single task has shrunk to less than a minute over the past two decades.
While technological distractions are only going to increase, scientists say the lost focus can be rebuilt by taking deliberate steps.
One place to start is planning demanding work around your body’s natural rhythms of alertness and fatigue. During these “peaks of attention,” be mindful of minimizing interruptions by silencing notifications, blocking social media and reducing other distractions.
Don’t forget to take intentional breaks, especially ones that involve physical activity, preferably outdoors. Attention can also be strengthened directly through training – 12 minutes of mindfulness practice at least four times a week can improve attention, memory, and resilience to stress.
