Delta Air Lines knows a good opportunity when it sees one. In response to Southwest Airlines' decision to eliminate its popular Bags Fly Free policy, Delta is offering a status match challenge to Southwest's higher-tier frequent flyers, Inc. reports.
Earlier this year, Southwest announced that, starting May 28, it will begin charging for checked bags on flights booked on or after this date—ending one of its most beloved policies. While checked bag fees generated $5.5 billion in revenue for airlines last year, Southwest built its reputation as a customer-friendly alternative to the competition.
Now that Southwest is aligning more with its rivals, Delta is seizing the moment to highlight its overall experience. By offering perks to Southwest’s elite members—who may feel alienated by the new baggage fees—Delta is giving them a reason to compare and reconsider their loyalty.
