While it may be tempting to click “unsubscribe” at the bottom of an unwanted email, security experts warn that doing so can sometimes do more harm than good.
According to The Wall Street Journal, clicking “unsubscribe” can lead to malicious websites designed to test whether your email address is active.
In the best-case scenario, cybercriminals are simply verifying that your email is real. By interacting with spam, you signal that you’re a live target—potentially increasing the volume of spam you receive.
In more serious cases, clicking the link might direct you to a convincing but fake webpage where attackers try to steal your login credentials or install malware on your device.
