Throughout my life, I've struggled to prioritize personal care, exercise, and health. Any efforts made to fix unhealthy behavior have been fleeting, and no "warning sign" has alarmed me enough to focus on long-term lifestyle changes. As a rational and thoughtful person, my exercise and dieting habits have been significant outliers in my otherwise sensible behavior.
A few months ago, I attended an EO event in Minneapolis, where I heard life coach Danny Martoe speak about the power of change and healthy living. In that moment, I decided that it's now or never and hired him to embark on his 10-week program.
Shortly after signing up with Danny, two experiences further triggered my need for change. Back in February, I went on an EO forum retreat, where we began our activities with a bike ride. About 3.5 miles and a few hills into the ride, I felt like I was on the verge of collapse. Although I thankfully didn't end up passing out, this was a stark reminder that I needed to take my health seriously.
At the very beginning of the program, Danny sent me to get a Dexafit test that evaluates my body fat composition, bone density, and other variables. While the results should not have surprised me, they were still jarring and were a serious reminder that I need to commit myself to my health.
I am 55 years old. The test came back with a disturbing result: my biological age is 59. Perhaps worse, I got an overall body grade of a C-, the lowest grade I have ever gotten on anything in my life. The test also measured my visceral fat, and to be perfectly honest, I am too embarrassed to share that score.
The good news is that these moments were wakeup calls, not permanent sentences. I have since plunged deep into Danny’s virtual program, and the results have been remarkable. I am down over 20 pounds and have exercised more in the last few months than I have in the previous few decades. Most importantly, I feel healthy, solid, and fully committed to retaining these good habits.
Sometimes, a picture is better than a thousand words. This memory picture just popped up on my Facebook. Comparing it now and then is extremely satisfying.
