AmiSight 7/23: If the Crisis Were Today

One of the things I’ve been thinking about lately is how differently we behave when a crisis is real versus when it’s only hypothetical.
When the crisis is in front of us, priorities become remarkably clear. We stop wasting time. We make decisions faster. We focus on what actually matters. We cut through the noise.
But when the crisis is something we think might happen six months or two years from now, it’s surprisingly easy to convince ourselves we’ll deal with it later.
“I’ll refinance next year.”
“I’ll diversify my customer base when things slow down.”
“I’ll build more cash reserves after this next project.”
“I’ll spend more time with my family when work calms down.”
The problem is that many of the things that would make us stronger in a future crisis are exactly the things we struggle to prioritize when business is good.
A question I’ve started asking myself is this: If the crisis I worry about was happening today, what would I do differently?
Then comes the harder question: Why am I waiting?
You don’t need to live in fear of what’s around the corner. But you can use the possibility of tomorrow’s challenges to make better decisions today.
Sometimes the best way to prepare for a future crisis is to act as though it has already arrived.
