AmiSight 9/25: The CEO Conundrum: Why Ignoring Employee Voices Could Backfire

While employees in the trenches aren’t typically involved in the hiring of CEOs or other C-suite executives, they certainly are affected by the results and, at times, make their voices heard after the deal is done.

Although there is an argument that today’s employees aren’t committed enough or knowledgeable enough to help choose the head honcho, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, author and Harvard Business School professor, weighs in on the topic in the Wall Street Journal.

Yes, employee loyalty may be on the decline, she says, but expecting staff to implement a strategy in which they had no input, from a leader they didn’t help choose, can end badly.

The employees involved in the business every day generally know the issues facing the organization and could benefit by having a direct relationship with top leaders who met with them while campaigning for the job, she says. If more informed and engaged, they are also more likely to come up with ideas to move the business forward and reinforce the organization’s core values and mission.
