AmiSight 10/26: The Myth of Easy Money

Social media has made owning a laundromat look like a dream business. Buy some washing machines, collect quarters, and enjoy passive income. But as this Wall Street Journal article points out, the reality can be quite different.
One entrepreneur bought a laundromat in California and found herself dealing with drug dealers in the bathroom. Others have struggled with broken equipment, unexpected repair bills, difficult customers, and the challenges of managing employees. One new owner hasn't even broken even yet. The industry can be profitable, but it takes a lot more work than the TikTok videos suggest.
I see a broader lesson here for anyone thinking about buying a business. It's easy to fall in love with the idea of being an entrepreneur, especially when someone else makes it look simple. But buying a business isn't the same as buying an investment that runs itself. Before you take the plunge, make sure you understand not just the financials, but what you're actually signing up to do every day. There's a big difference between owning a business and operating one.
