AmiSight 9/18: The Stress of Self-Employment: Why Only Some Business Owners Last

"To successfully be a self-employed business owner, you have to be comfortable with a level of stress that would destroy most."
Self-employment looks appealing from the outside. Be your own boss. Set your own hours. Build something that's yours. From the inside, it looks different.
There is no steady paycheck. No one above you to make the final call. Payroll is due whether or not the month went well. Customers need answers. Employees need direction. Vendors need payment. All of it lands on one person, often at the same time.
Most people are not built for that kind of pressure. That is not a criticism. It is simply true. The constant weight of decisions, the unpredictability of revenue, and the responsibility for other people's livelihoods would overwhelm most people quickly.
The owners who last are not the ones who feel no stress. They are the ones who learn to carry it without letting it break them.
