The old adage “don’t believe everything you see” is more relevant than ever. A recent Business Insider piece by Amanda Hoover highlighted how hyper-realistic prank videos are swamping the internet and becoming convincingly realistic.

Tech investments in the past few years have led to rapid changes in the quality of videos, resulting in police departments putting out public service announcements warning about teen pranks and dead celebrities’ families requesting to stop using their loved ones’ image and likeness.

As with most media, the most outrageous content is consumed the most. The more partisan, shocking disinformation as well as rage-baiting, exploitative content usually rises to the top as algorithms are trained to churn out the slop.

The interest in the weird and wily should fade as the novelty wears off. But for now, it will only get worse before it gets better.

At the end of the day, we have to use AI responsibly and not turn it into a tool for tricking people or stirring up nonsense.
