Procrastination. It’s something most people deal with at some point – or all of the time. But what causes it and how can we fix it?
Amelia Tait, a freelance writer for The Guardian, challenged herself to not procrastinate at all for one working week. No TV, no Nintendo, no YouTube videos. Just sticking to the tasks on her to-do list. And it worked.Â
To help understand why she was able to stop procrastinating so easily, she reached out to Fuschia Sirois, a psychology professor at Durham University. Sirois stresses that procrastination is not caused by character flaws but rather is an emotional regulation issue.
Sirois recommends addressing the emotions behind procrastination: practice self-compassion instead of self-criticism, connect with others facing similar struggles, sit mindfully with your emotions, journal, and find meaning in your tasks.
