AmiSight 4/26: How a Lighting Contractor Made it Through the Pandemic

This week on AmiSights the podcast, we're sitting down with serial entrepreneur Kyle McClelland! Kyle has several successful businesses, from an Electrical Contracting company to a successful business coaching company. Have Lights Will Travel is Nevada's premier mobile lighting contractor. Locally owned and operated, the company has been in business for over 35 years and specializes in commercial and industrial lighting maintenance and energy-efficient retrofits.

Kyle got his start there as a technician in 2005, and in 2017, he finished buying out the owner and became the 100% owner of Have Lights Will Travel. With the framework of this long-running northern Nevada lighting contractor well established, Kyle had big plans for additional growth and performance. By 2019, he had expanded the business into southern Nevada and points of California, and he's currently securing licenses in Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Idaho, and Colorado. Along the way, Have Lights has developed a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and technologically advanced companies in town, with a highly customized approach to customer service. Kyle is also an active member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.

Before the pandemic, his company was growing at a rate of 60%, and they had 78 technicians across the western U.S. They were getting contracts from major retail stores and were up 40% year over year in 2020 when COVID hit, and clients started pausing their jobs.

Kyle took this as an opportunity to slow down, clean out their inventory, do some data cleanup, etc. They also slightly shifted their model and decided to get their “Sign License” to get more jobs and started installing power for hot tubs. Luckily, they didn’t have to lay anyone off.
