According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, Carvana is quietly moving from used cars into new-car sales, and traditional dealers are nervous. By acquiring seven Stellantis dealerships and applying its online, no-haggle model, Carvana is testing whether consumers are ready to buy new vehicles entirely digitally. One Arizona dealership became the top-selling Chrysler/Jeep/Ram/Dodge store in the country within a year.
The bigger story is the continued shift away from the traditional dealership experience. Consumers increasingly value convenience, transparent pricing, and home delivery over in-person negotiation. Stellantis appears willing to experiment with this model as it looks to regain market share and modernize distribution.
Bottom line: Carvana may be proving that the future of auto retail is national, digital, and frictionless, putting pressure on traditional dealers to evolve quickly or lose relevance.
