As the cost of coffee rises – along with its demand – coffee drinkers are seeking relief, whether by brewing at home, cutting back, or switching to other caffeinated beverages.

The price of ground coffee hit a record high of over $7 a pound in March, up from $4 in January 2020. This price increase is likely to continue as the effects of President Trump’s trade war persists. As coffee is a delicate crop that grows in very specific conditions, the United States grows very little of it domestically and is the world’s biggest importer of coffee.

One option that some companies are trying is beanless coffee, Inc. reports.  Unlike traditional coffee, which is brewed from roasted coffee beans, beanless coffee is made from other natural ingredients like chickpeas, date seeds, and caffeine from green tea.

While the response to the alternative product has been lukewarm, some companies are trying a 50/50 blend – half real coffee and half beanless coffee. The popularity of this hybrid product remains to be seen.
