Sports became great because they were one of the few things everyone could enjoy together. But somewhere along the way, leagues started treating fans less like communities and more like revenue streams.
Today, following your favorite team often means juggling multiple streaming subscriptions, while attending a big game can cost thousands of dollars. Stadiums are increasingly being built around luxury suites and premium experiences rather than everyday fans.
As a recent Business Insider article highlighted, the cost and complexity of being a sports fan continues to rise. The irony is that sports derive their value from mass appeal. The NFL, NBA, and World Cup became cultural phenomena because they were accessible. If leagues keep squeezing fans for short-term revenue, they risk weakening the very connection that made them so valuable in the first place.
It's a good reminder for every business: when growth becomes the only goal, it's easy to forget what customers loved about you to begin with.
