AmiSight 6/25: The Weight of Candor

One of the hardest parts of my job is being candid with entrepreneurs.

People come to me with dreams, plans, and hopes for what their businesses can become. The last thing I want to do is discourage them. But it would be irresponsible to encourage a funding strategy that isn't realistic in today's market.

Sometimes I can almost feel the disappointment on the other side of the screen when I tell someone their goals aren't achievable right now.

Whenever possible, I try not to stop at "no." I look for a different path, a smaller step, or a more realistic way forward. I also encourage entrepreneurs to get other opinions and not rely solely on mine.

These conversations have become easier over time, but they never stop hurting. And maybe that's a good thing. The day delivering difficult truths becomes easy is probably the day I stop appreciating the courage it takes to chase a dream.
