AmiSight 7/29: When You Already Know the Answer

A recent Entrepreneur article caught my attention because of one simple admission from a founder: he knew for almost a year before he finally acted. He was talking about a difficult personnel decision, but it made me think about how often this happens in business. Deep down, we usually know the answer long before we’re ready to do something about it.
We wait because we’re loyal. We hope things will get better. We don’t want to have the hard conversation. Sometimes we convince ourselves that if we just give it a little more time, the problem will work itself out. In my experience, it rarely does. More often than not, waiting just makes the situation harder for everyone involved.
I’ve also learned that keeping someone in the wrong role rarely helps anyone. It isn’t fair to the employee, the rest of the team, or the business. These decisions are never easy, but making them with honesty and respect is usually better than letting uncertainty drag on.
One of the hardest parts of leadership isn’t figuring out what the right decision is. More often, it’s finding the courage to act on what you already know.
