AmiSight 11/4: No Layoffs for 75 Years. What Does It Take?

The Wall Street Journal story about the Gund Co. caught my attention.
The company has grown at an average of 18% a year for a decade and has never laid off an employee. That sounds like a remarkable culture. But it also takes real discipline. They keep staffing lean so they can handle slower periods, listen when employees raise concerns, and hold people to high standards.
There’s a lesson here for business owners. Taking care of your people is not just something you say when business is good. It takes planning and tough choices before things get difficult.
No one model works for every business. But it’s worth asking: have I built a business that can take care of its people when the market changes?
