AmiSight 11/3: The Solopreneur Boom Has a Trade-Off

There’s a lot to celebrate about the rise of the solopreneur. More people can start a business, serve customers and earn a living without building a traditional company.

But Matthew Lynn raises a question worth thinking about: What happens when more of our economic life becomes disconnected? Businesses do more than generate income. They create relationships with employees, customers, suppliers and the communities around them. Those connections are part of what makes a market economy work.

I spend a lot of time with business owners, and I know there’s no one right way to build a business. Some owners want to stay small and work for themselves. Others want to hire, grow and create something that outlasts them. Both are legitimate goals.

The question is whether we celebrate independence so much that we overlook what businesses contribute when they bring people together.

Growth isn’t right for every owner, but the connections a business creates can matter well beyond its bottom line.
