AmiSight 8/6: The Courage to Change Your Mind

One of the best parts of what I do is getting to meet entrepreneurs at the very beginning of their journey.

This week I met Ethan Weiner, a young entrepreneur with an interesting story. He spent time working in the merchant cash advance industry, but over time he became increasingly uncomfortable with what he was seeing. Too many borrowers didn't really understand what they were signing up for. They thought they were getting one thing, only to discover they had taken on financing that was dramatically more expensive than they realized. Before long, many found themselves on a very fast debt treadmill that was difficult to get off.

Instead of accepting that as just the way business is done, Ethan decided to try to do something about it. He started Audit Deal, with the goal of helping borrowers better understand the financing they're considering before they sign.

I honestly have no idea what his business will look like five years from now. My guess is it will evolve, because that's what almost every startup does. The first idea is rarely the final one.

What struck me wasn't that he has everything figured out. It was that he had the conviction to walk away from an industry that no longer aligned with his values and the courage to try to build something better.

I always enjoy meeting entrepreneurs who are willing to challenge the status quo. Whether Ethan's current model is the one that ultimately succeeds is almost beside the point. The willingness to question, adapt, and keep building is what entrepreneurship is all about.

I'm looking forward to watching where his journey takes him.
